PM Shehbaz Sharif Urges SOCAR to Tap Investment Opportunities in Pakistan’s Oil & Gas Sector

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday called on Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy giant SOCAR to seize promising investment opportunities in Pakistan’s oil and gas sector, as the country seeks to attract critical foreign capital amid ongoing energy challenges.

During a meeting with Mikayil Jabbarov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, who led an official delegation to Pakistan, Sharif highlighted Azerbaijan’s strategic interest in the White Oil Pipeline Project, a key infrastructure initiative expected to enhance regional energy connectivity.

The discussions focused on strengthening economic ties and exploring a Pakistan-Azerbaijan Joint Investment Company with equal participation from both countries. The two sides also explored cooperation in sectors including defense production, petroleum, minerals, construction, livestock, tourism, and information technology.

Sharif emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral trade and improving regional connectivity, underscoring Pakistan’s strategic role as a gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia. He also praised Azerbaijan’s involvement in initiatives like the Trans-Caspian International Trade Corridor, highlighting its significance as a regional partner.

In a gesture of goodwill, Sharif invited President Ilham Aliyev for an official visit to Pakistan, reaffirming the country’s commitment to deepening ties. Jabbarov expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s hospitality and optimism for a comprehensive 2025-28 roadmap for trade, economic, and investment cooperation.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Leghari, and other government representatives.
